Where can I go in Athens or out side Athens for a day visit? You many choices, from near by Greek islands (Aegina, Agistri, Hydra. ) ideal for day trips , Athens beaches, classical ancient ruins and beautiful sea side towns
We recommend Cape Sounio and or Lake Vouliagmeni.
Cape Sounio
Cape Sounio is the southern most tip of Athens. The place is known for its Temple of Poseidon an important monument from the Golden Age of Athens.
How to get to Sounio: You will need to take the public bus KTEL from the main bus station located on Mavromateon. The area is very easy to find. You take the red line to Omonoia and either walk up past the National Archaeological museum or you get off at the next stop Victoria and from there it is a 5 minute walk to the bus. The trip is around 1,5 hours
Lake Vouliagmeni:
The name means sunken lake and it is a small water lake fed by underground currents. The lake is located on the south riviera of Athens. It formed around 2,000 years ago, after a large cavern collapsed from an earthquake. There is an underwater cave that has never been fully explored and many amateur divers have drowned trying. The lake functions as a spa due the constant warm water and rich content.
How to get to Lake Vouliagmeni: You take the red Metro line from Syntagma square to Elliniko and from there you will need to take the bus 122. The trip is around 1,5 hours.
Are there any beaches in Athens?
There are plenty of beaches to visit along the south coast. Glyfada, Varkiza and Voula are just some of the great beaches you can visit while in Athens.
How to get there? Easy! You can take the A2 or B2 bus from Syntagma to get to Glyfada, the B2 to get to Voula. To get to Varkiza you can take the red metro line to Elliniko and from there the 171 bus.
